Postales de Orgullo was a powerful project envisioned by Workforce Coordinator Lina Rodriguez that celebrated the voices, strength and creativity of Latino immigrant communities. In November 2024, Nathaly Rubio-Torio, CEO of Voces Latinas, traveled to the U.S.–Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, to listen, witness, and reflect. For over 22 years, Voces Latinas has provided free services to immigrant communities in Queens, New York. On this journey, she met voices that echo the complex and urgent realities faced by migrants today, at the border and beyond. Follow her journey.

In this gripping narrative of an asylum seeker navigating the challenges of modern U.S. immigration court, Voces Latinas, a nonprofit based in Queens, emerges as a crucial sanctuary for newly arrived migrants. As federal agents increasingly wait outside courtrooms to detain respondents, the organization provides free legal clinics and support services for those too vulnerable to face the system alone. It was in Voces Latinas’ basement—now with cardboard-covered windows after a prior ICE incursion—that Mercedes, an Indigenous Kichwa-Puruhá mother, sought help. The staff not only connected her with legal counsel but also assisted her in filing to attend her hearing virtually, in hopes of avoiding arrest. Though the court denied the motion, Voces Latinas stood as a rare and vital line of defense in a city where fear now shadows every courtroom visit.

A Legacy of Support: Voces Latinas Through the Years
Since its founding in 2003, Voces Latinas has been a vital source of support, advocacy, and education for the Latine immigrant community. Through years of dedication, the organization has empowered individuals to make informed and healthier decisions for themselves and their families. It has worked tirelessly to normalize HIV testing, reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and respond to domestic violence within the community. By offering workshops, leadership development, and direct connection with legislative representatives, Voces Latinas has helped amplify the voices of Latine immigrants. In Queens, posters in Spanish advertise rooms for migrants, often shared online to avoid expensive real estate agents. Overcrowded housing is common due to high rents, leading to tensions. Emperatriz Carpio, who manages the domestic violence program at Voces Latinas, highlighted that domestic violence and substance abuse are frequent issues in these living situations, where financial instability makes it hard to escape.

En la ciudad de Nueva York, los adultos mayores latinos enfrentan las tasas de pobreza más altas entre las personas mayores, viéndose obligados a seguir trabajando en su vejez para poder sobrevivir. Más allá de las dificultades económicas, muchos también luchan contra el aislamiento y las barreras culturales que limitan su acceso a la atención médica. Voces Latinas is helping migrant women in New York City through direct outreach and support. Led by outreach coordinator Paula Velez, the organization’s team of promotoras builds trust with women working in subway stations by offering resources like healthcare, legal aid, and guidance on preventing child labor. Through personal connections and compassionate conversations, Voces Latinas empowers these women and their families to overcome fear, access essential services, and break the cycle of exploitation, while advocating for the education of migrant children.

In Jackson Heights, Queens, Voces Latinas partnered with Equity for Children and The StoryCenter to help amplify the voices of 24 Latinx women through Digital Storytelling. This project highlighted challenges like discrimination, violence, and lack of access to education. The initiative allowed women to share their personal experiences and advocate for better support and integration in New York City.

Many Ecuadoran migrants, fleeing a crisis at home, sell candy on New York’s subway platforms to survive. Most of these migrants are Kichwa-speaking Indigenous people from rural Ecuador. Voces Latinas, a Queens-based non-profit, supports them with education, legal aid, and resources through its "promotora model." They focus on helping vulnerable groups, especially migrant women and children. Social media, like TikTok, is also used to connect migrants with their families back home, strengthening community ties and offering hope for the future.

They focus on outreach, enrollment, and health education, ensuring that even the most vulnerable can navigate healthcare systems and receive affordable services.

This article showcases the personal stories of four individuals supported by Voces Latinas, a nonprofit organization in New York City. Veronica, Alexander, Elia, and Gloria each share their experiences with HIV and the challenges they face, from domestic violence to immigration struggles. Voces Latinas has been instrumental in offering support, information, and community, helping individuals navigate life with HIV and empowering them to educate others.

Una de las metas de Voces Latinas es reducir el numero de transmisiones de VIH proporcionando PrEP, el cual es un tratamiento preventivo, a las comunidades vulnerables como los inmigrantes.
