Voces Latinas will be honored by the Queens Borough President's Office during its Annual Pride Month Celebration on June 24 in recognition of more than two decades of service to LGBTQIA+ communities across New York City. Founded in Queens 23 years ago, the organization has become a trusted resource for LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly within Latino and immigrant communities, through programs focused on health, wellbeing, empowerment, education, and legal support. "This recognition reflects the strength and resilience of the communities we serve," said Nathaly Rubio-Torio, Chief Executive Officer of Voces Latinas. The award will be presented by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. at Queens Borough Hall.

This free event offered HIV testing, blood pressure screenings, mental health information, access to immigration resources, health insurance enrollment, and much more—all in an atmosphere of celebration, culture, and community.

In November 2024, Nathaly Rubio-Torio, CEO of Voces Latinas, traveled to the U.S.–Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, to listen, witness, and reflect. For over 22 years, Voces Latinas has provided free services to immigrant communities in Queens, New York. On this journey, she met voices that echo the complex and urgent realities faced by migrants today, at the border and beyond. Follow her journey.

In this gripping narrative of an asylum seeker navigating the challenges of modern U.S. immigration court, Voces Latinas, a nonprofit based in Queens, emerges as a crucial sanctuary for newly arrived migrants. As federal agents increasingly wait outside courtrooms to detain respondents, the organization provides free legal clinics and support services for those too vulnerable to face the system alone. It was in Voces Latinas’ basement—now with cardboard-covered windows after a prior ICE incursion—that Mercedes, an Indigenous Kichwa-Puruhá mother, sought help. The staff not only connected her with legal counsel but also assisted her in filing to attend her hearing virtually, in hopes of avoiding arrest. Though the court denied the motion, Voces Latinas stood as a rare and vital line of defense in a city where fear now shadows every courtroom visit.

A Legacy of Support: Voces Latinas Through the Years
Since its founding in 2003, Voces Latinas has been a vital source of support, advocacy, and education for the Latine immigrant community. Through years of dedication, the organization has empowered individuals to make informed and healthier decisions for themselves and their families. It has worked tirelessly to normalize HIV testing, reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and respond to domestic violence within the community. By offering workshops, leadership development, and direct connection with legislative representatives, Voces Latinas has helped amplify the voices of Latine immigrants. In Queens, posters in Spanish advertise rooms for migrants, often shared online to avoid expensive real estate agents. Overcrowded housing is common due to high rents, leading to tensions. Emperatriz Carpio, who manages the domestic violence program at Voces Latinas, highlighted that domestic violence and substance abuse are frequent issues in these living situations, where financial instability makes it hard to escape.
